The paper was still heavy, however this time it’s edges weren’t crisp, and it no longer had the distinguished feel of pristine parchment.
She looked at the cheque and breathed in deeply, paying attention to the bank’s holographic image of authenticity, before addressing all members of the board.
“What do you want it for anyway? What are you going to do with it?”
The man at the end of the table snorted and rolled his eyes.
“What do you care?” he asked.
“You’re getting paid to do the job….you’re not getting paid to know what happens afterwards….just answer the questions you’ve been asked.
Firstly….can you do the job?
And secondly…..do you want the job? It’s that simple.
You either want the job or you don’t. Which is it?
The woman with the cheque for ten million dollars bit the right-hand side of her bottom lip and looked at the Green handbag with no label.
“Does the job have a bonus?” she asked. “Is there a trailer fee attached?”
The man who snorted previously found himself laughing out loud.
“A trailer fee?” he questioned. “Are you serious Lassy? You’re a hacker. Not a fund manager. What on earth do you need a trailer fee for?”
The woman with the ten million dollar cheque placed the curled up piece of paper on the wooden boardroom table.
“Because ten million dollars isn’t a lot of money,” she said.
And the job you are requesting is priceless. I can’t even begin to put a figure on the value of something of this request.
The man at the table laughed louder than the time before and reached behind his leather back chair to remove a Cuban cigar from the buffet.
He cut the end and lit the cancer stick, forcing vapour onto everyone trapped in the room.
“Hey Lassie?” he queried.
“Is that your shitbox 1977 beat up black corvette stingray sitting out there in the parking lot?
The one with the bald tyres and faded paint job?
The one that’s sitting in the same carpark as My Powerful grand tourer worth more money than your mama earned in her entire lifetime?
Coz if it is, I reckon right about now ten million dollars is a shitload of money… if it’s someone like you.
The woman looked at the cheque which was clearly discarded on the table, a third of its original size, no holograph or price displayed, curled up…edges rolled…and then shrugged her shoulders.
“Well….” She said.
“Whether it’s a lot of money to someone like me or not doesn’t change the question I asked.
Is there a trailer fee attached to the job or not?”
The cigar sucking man looked at the woman with incredulation and disbelief.
“How much Lassy?” he asked. “Exactly how much do you want?”
“Not much,” she said. “A single dollar.
Doubled every day for 31 days….it’s not a lot to ask, but if what I am giving you is as valuable as I think, then it will allow me to at least have some kind of financial compensation worthy of the job….grant me the request and I’ll give you what you ask for…making sure when the USB is handed over you have everything you need.”
The cigar sucking man puffed chewed the fat and spat his poison, then picked up his $300 scotch and downed the lot at once.
The woman reached into the green handbag with no label and took out a tablet and placed it on the surface.
When you give me the money…” She said. “I’ll give you the files…..If you want them today, you can have them today….but first, I want my money held in bitcoin first…
The man with the glasses sitting to her right nodded, and the cigar sucking vaunter clasped his hands and made the call.
“Give the girl what she asks for,” he said gruffly to the voice in the canary islands before handing over the phone to the woman who gave instructions clear for everyone to hear.
$1…..doubled every day for 31 days….paid up front….” She told the accountant.
“Yes….” she said….
You heard him clearly tell you to give me what I asked for….”
The man in the canary islands began to protest and the woman hung up the phone as if she didn’t hear.
30 seconds later the accountant called back, asking if the cigar sucking man was aware of what he was doing…..got shot down in flames….and then meekly hung up the phone, realising the girl’s request would empty the entire vault
